Faith Roots Reproductive Action is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing reproductive justice. We advocate for pro-abortion policies and reproductive freedom at both the local and state level.

Through the Faith Roots Abortion Fund, we support patients traveling to New Mexico for abortion care by providing transportation, lodging, meals, and practical assistance along their journey.

OUR MISSION

Faith Roots Reproductive Action advocates for bodily autonomy by shifting religious and spiritual narratives and engaging in collaborative partnerships. We demand access to the full spectrum of reproductive healthcare, including abortion, for all persons.

OUR VISION

We envision a New Mexico where we recognize, affirm, and honor every person’s power to fiercely defend their bodily autonomy and access to reproductive healthcare including abortion.

OUR COMMUNITY

Our team is driven by a shared vision of hope—a future where reproductive justice, healing, and access to abortion care are not just possible, but protected. Rooted in compassion, faith in action, and a commitment to community, we show up every day.

Reproductive justice for every person.

The reproductive justice framework was developed and defined by SisterSong. SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective was formed in 1997 by 16 organizations of women of color from four mini-communities (Native American, African American, Latina, and Asian American) who recognized that we have the right and responsibility to represent ourselves and our communities, and the equally compelling need to advance the perspectives and needs of women of color.

As people of religious faith and conviction, our commitment to reproductive rights includes these core values:

  • That families are created in many ways.

  • That all families should have the resources to care for their children with dignity.

  • That all persons desiring to be parents should have the right and opportunity to do so.

  • That no one should be forced into parenthood, or into narrowly-defined parenting roles.

  • That the sexual experiences of consenting adults are not open to government inspection, opinion, and legislation.

  • That all persons have a right to privacy.

  • That all persons have a right to education and employment without discrimination based on gender, pregnancy, or sexual orientation or identity.

  • That no person should ever be forced or coerced into contraception, sterilization, or abortion.

  • That caring communities have a responsibility to ensure that all young people have access to medically accurate, comprehensive sex education.

  • That all people should have access to all reproductive and sexual health information and services, including birthing options, contraception, sterilization and abortion.

  • That all persons should be able to live a life free from violence, including physical and sexual violence, which prevents them from controlling their sexual and reproductive lives.

  • That sexually transmitted infections are not a result of moral failure, and the best medical information, prevention, and treatment should be available to all.

  • That sex is a glorious component of the human experience, a gift of the Divine, to be expressed with respect, responsibility, and joy.

OUR REBRAND

In April 2023, NM RCRC completed its disaffiliation from the national Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (RCRC). When the national RCRC decided to split from their state affiliates in 2022, it gave us an opportunity to take a step back and consider our organization—its mission, vision, and how it could best meet this moment of crisis. During that time, we embarked on a rebranding process and successfully launched our new identity a year later.

The Process

The rebranding strategy included evaluating the organization’s name, its ties to the national affiliate, brand, and messaging. NM RCRC engaged in research, held regular meetings with staff, reorganized and updated the organization’s website, hosted two focus group interviews with stakeholders to inform the process, and distributed a survey to stakeholders, including staff, board members, donors, funders, and partners.

What We Heard

In the interviews and meetings, staff and stakeholders shared their vision of a world in which NM RCRC’s work to support access to abortion would no longer be needed—a world where reproductive rights and abortion access are a given rather than something to fight for. The rebranding process was centered on this vision of hope.

We Are Rooted In...

  • Service

  • Compassion

  • Values

  • Faith in action

  • Respite and care—pre and post abortion

  • Spiritual and practical support

  • Judgment-free space for healing, especially for those seeking care who have been wounded by religion

  • A commitment to doing better for our community, including our staff and partners

We heard from staff and stakeholders that NM RCRC’s work is rooted in faith and healing from religious trauma, rather than in any one specific religion. Stakeholders also recognized that the color purple in NM RCRC’s brand was deeply ingrained in the identity of the organization. Purple was carried forward to honor that recognition—an important element for any organization—and a complementary color was chosen to convey a sense of calm. The new logos leveraged this identity by featuring these colors along with the lavender plant, which is used, along with sage, in our recovery spaces for healing and comfort.

Finally, stakeholders and staff shared their deep commitment and ties to New Mexico. New Mexicans are often spiritual and religious, tied to the land, and community-minded.

Results

As a reflection of this process, NM RCRC adopted the organizational name: Faith Roots Reproductive Action.
